CPHT gives you the tools to be a confident Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy Practitioner and helps you create the foundations of your own future practice for you to build on after qualifying.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the course in Glasgow and would recommend it to anyone thinking about hypnotherapy training in the future.
I have just qualified and in such a short space of time I cannot believe how much my life has completely changed .
This course was the best decision I ever made I knew I wanted to make career changes , little did I know my personal life would be come so much happier and that I would become a much better version of myself the person I actually wanted to be .
I choose the course and spent a lot of time researching other courses but CPHT was the only one that offered me what I was looking for a professional qualification at the end and a classroom setting and a actual tutor to have access to which was all available .
The training was very modern up to date neuroscience at times was hard but Gary the tutor is exceptional at teaching and his methods helped make it fun interesting and amazing and at the end I felt very knowledgable hypnotherapist .
I can’t praise him high enough .
Practice started quite early on and at first it felt daunting , but this too was the absolutely best thing ever I loved that in such a short space of time near the end of the course I was seeing paying clients .
I worked for the NHS for 10 years and as a result of how much I changed I decided to concentrate on my hypnotherapy practice . As I enjoyed so much helping others and seeing results in a short space of time .
It is an inspirational course run by a inspirational team of teachers . Thank you so much .
A profound sense of empowerment was gained for me during the course and subsequently as a qualified clinical practitioner, which I now pass on to clients and watch the rewards this brings to me and my clients, life changing on both accounts.

Why should you choose CPHT?
Hypnosis
As you might expect on a hypnotherapy course, you’ll cover everything you need to know to use therapeutic hypnosis (hypnotherapy) safely and effectively with clients.
Neuroscience
Neuroscience is a cornerstone of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. You will learn about the most relevant neuroscience research and how to use that information effectively with your clients.
Psychotherapy
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines the best of the best of evidence based psychotherapy therapy, explanations of neuroscience and therapeutic hypnosis.
Start Your Business As you Train
A central aim of CPHT is to produce business ready Solution Focused Hypnotherapists. We encourage you to start building your practice whilst you train, which means you, like many of our graduates, can leave the course, if not with a full time practice in place then a part time practice up and running.
Business Ready
Knowing how to do the job of a Hypnotherapist is one thing. Growing and running a successful business is equally important in becoming a successful hypnotherapist. The course gives you a solid, therapy specific, marketing foundation and covers the basics of running a business, maximising the chances of building a successful practice during and after the course.
Start Charging Clients Whilst Training
Taking payment for a service provided can be a step which some people find difficult. In the last two or three months of the course we ask you to charge a student fee to your clients so you can get used to this part of running a business. This means that upon graduation all you need to do is remove the word “student” and change the prices you charge.
Who is the course suitable for?
We do not look for any particular kind of experience or any specific qualifications when people apply for our Hypnotherapy Diploma Course. As a result, we get people from a very wide range of backgrounds. It is, of course, important to have an interest in Hypnotherapy and a desire to help people make positive changes in their lives, however no previous experience or qualifications are required.
People looking to retrain & start a new career
Some of our students are looking to change careers completely, others would like to be a part-time Hypnotherapist whilst maintaining their current job. The course is a commitment but is part-time. Some students have time to devote to the course and use this to get their hypnotherapy practices completely set up and running by the time they graduate. Others take a more measured approach as they work around work and/or family commitments.
Professionals looking to add a new skill set
Are you already a talking therapist a physical therapist or a coach? Do you already work with people but in a different way? Many of our students are looking to add additional skills to their current offering or improve their ability to work with people in their current working environment.
What will you learn on our Hypnotherapy Diploma Course?
Once you have attended all ten modules and met the requirements of the course, you will be awarded the Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH) by CPHT.
To be awarded your Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) you will need to complete a portfolio of evidence during the course. The Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma is awarded by the NCH (the largest Hypnotherapy Association in the UK) and it has been externally accredited and verified by the NCFE (an awarding body in the UK) as being the equivalent of a level four qualification on the educational and qualification framework.
During this Module you will be introduced to hypnotherapy and learn what it is and what it can help with.
You will learn all about solution focused hypnotherapy, how it developed & about its founder, David Newton. You’ll start to understand how the brain creates the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and anger. We’ll show you a presentation using an EEG machine, that shows what happens when the brain is in a trance state. You’ll experience trance yourself and practice it on other students.
There will be a few practical exercises to get your brain working and help you understand what your clients will experience. This Module will give you the materials and confidence to begin practicing on volunteers when you get home.
This second Module will see your knowledge of neuroscience increase and help you to understand more about why we do, what we do.
You’ll be introduced to the format of a typical solution focused hypnotherapy session. You’ll learn how to explain how the brain works to your clients. Understanding what information you’ll need from your clients, so that you help them effectively, will be an area that we focus on in this module. An introduction to GDPR requirements will ensure that you keep your client’s information safe.
You’ll get involved in some more practical exercises and practice giving and receiving trance with your fellow students. You’ll enjoy hearing about the experiences of your fellow students with their clients and they will enjoy hearing all about yours.
In Module 3, you’ll learn more about Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and how it underpins the psychological element of how we work.
You’ll practice using scaling and the miracle question to help your volunteers make plans, so they can take small steps towards their goal. You’ll understand the importance of metaphors in all that we do and learn how to create your own in a group exercise. You’ll listen to one of David Newton’s case studies to help you structure your session effectively. From this you’ll start to understand how a typical client makes progress.
One more exercise this month will help you see how to personalise your explanation of the brain for your volunteers. As usual you will be sharing your experiences of working with clients with the group and hearing about those of your fellow students.
Mental health is the theme for this Module, understanding what it is and how you can help people with theirs. This module also sees the introduction of the portfolio for the ‘Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma’ (HPD). We will give you guidance on how to complete it and the type of case studies you’ll need to evidence it.
You will be introduced to free/cheap marketing this month, to help you find the volunteers you’ll need for your case studies. Some students will be carrying out their first practical assessment this month. This too will be potentially helpful as evidence for the portfolio.
As usual you will be hearing about the experiences of working with clients, from your fellow students and sharing your experiences too. We’ll spend a little more time focusing on the Miracle Question and you’ll see a demonstration of a typical hypnotherapy session.
In this Module, we focus almost exclusively on phobias.
You will learn the difference between a simple and complex phobia and the different way of dealing with each. PTSD is a form of extreme phobia, and we will talk about how best to help people with this condition too. Our approach for simple phobias uses an adaptation of the NLP Rewind technique combined with a Reframe. The Rewind & Reframe techniques will each be explained, then demonstrated. You will practice both the Rewind and Reframe on other students.
We will learn about your experiences with clients this month and a few more students will be carrying out their first practical assessment. Two other NLP techniques that you’ll learn about this month are the Anchoring and Swish techniques. Swish is great for people who have an interview, exam or test coming up, while Anchoring is helpful to change a client’s mood in unexpected situations.
In Module 6 we learn all about the different behavioural styles that people display and how you can build rapport with your clients.
You will learn how to help people to stop smoking or vaping in just one session. An introduction to working with children and safeguarding are also topics that we cover in module 6. Our second marketing session looks at websites and what should be included in yours, when you’re ready to make a start.
A few more students will complete their first practical assessments this Module and we will continue to find out about your experiences with clients. As usual there will be an exercise for you to do, that will help build confidence in your new skills.
During Module 7, you will learn all about the neuroscience of obesity and how you will be able to help clients to lose weight. You will receive the latest research into hypnotherapy and how it has been shown to help with various conditions including some physical illnesses. Placebo is an interesting topic and we’ll focus on how it works and how it can help clients. How we can help clients with persistent pain is another area that we’ll focus on this month.
GDPR is something that was introduced briefly in module 2, now you’ll learn more about what you need to do to ensure compliance with current guidelines. There will be an additional opportunity to experience trance while practicing the miracle question on each other. The final students completing their first practical assessments will be completed.
As usual we will also enjoy hearing about the progress of your clients. After this Module you’ll be able to charge half price with your clients with permission from your tutor.
In the eighth Module you will learn how to help clients who want to improve their performance. Whether this is in sports, acting, singing, driving, or any other area. You’ll learn about OCD and how to help clients who suffer from it. You’ll gain an understanding of the analytical techniques developed by Freud and understand how other hypnotherapists use them.
You’ll be given information on how to apply the latest research in your therapy sessions with clients. This will help them to understand how best to support their recovery. We will learn all about your experiences with clients but in a new format this module, as we get closer to qualification. You’ll get the opportunity to tell us about a case study you’re proud of. Together, we’ll look at one of David Newton’s case studies and learn how to forecast their recovery based on essential information. It will help you to see how far you’ve come in the learning process.
As usual there are practical exercises for you to get involved with.
In Module 9, our third marketing session of the course will help you to know which types of paid-for advertising to best promote your new business. You will be reminded about what goes on in the brain while a client is in trance, with a recap on the EEG presentation. You will get the chance to talk about one of your successful case studies. Our feedback session will be in the same format as last month, as you learn how supervision sessions will run once you’ve qualified. You’ll look at liaising with other professionals, to help you get the best support for your clients.
Understanding the potential for progression after qualification, is important for many students. We’ll explain the requirements of continuous professional development that apply after qualification and details of the Advanced Hypnotherapy Diploma (AHD). You’ll gain an understanding of analytical techniques developed by Freud, so that you’ll understand how other hypnotherapists use them. In Module 9 you’ll again have the opportunity to practice the miracle question and enjoy a lovely trance session.
Graduation is the theme of this Module, making sure that you have everything you need to qualify with confidence. You’ll hear from one of last year’s graduates who will come in to talk to you about their first year in practice. They will focus on what they did right and what they wish they’d done differently. They will also answer any questions you may have, as you prepare to build your own business.
We will hear all about the final few case studies from the last students. Giving presentations, is something that successful therapists are asked to do from time to time. Working in small groups, you will prepare yourself for giving talks to local organisations, while practicing your knowledge at the same time. There will be some last-minute accounts pointers to ensure you know where to go for more detailed information. You’ll get some clarity on what letters you can add after your name once qualified.
We’ll finish off with an interesting listening exercise, before the presentation of the diplomas. Glasses of bubbly will help us all to celebrate your success, along with a tasty buffet to send you on your way!
How much time will I need to invest?
In order to provide the very best teaching and support possible the course includes 120 hours face to face teaching in the classroom. During this time the theory and knowledge of the various techniques and the science behind all parts of solution focused hypnotherapy are discussed, and you are given the opportunity to practice the skills in a safe environment. The 120 hours are usually delivered over one weekend a month each month, for ten months. Some schools also do weekday courses.
As a guide, for the commitment required, the total qualification time is approximately 450 hours across the ten-month hypnotherapy course. This includes classroom time, time for seeing clients, reading and time to complete the portfolio.

FAQs
Most frequent questions and answers
Each month there is an element of practical work, as part of your face to face training, where we can observe and advise students to improve their abilities.
You see volunteer clients, from the first weekend and throughout the course. After each session, we ask you to spend a couple of minutes reflecting on that session in your client logs. This develops better self-awareness and gives you the opportunity to set achievable development goals for yourself.
Each month you receive group supervision and discuss, with your lecturers and peers, challenges and successes from the previous month. This keeps you and your volunteer clients safe and helps you reflect more effectively on your work as a practitioner.
- A video presentation of your initial consultation, which you have 2-4 months to prepare for
- A written portfolio of work, which you have several months to complete
- 8 written case histories and one case history presentation.
We support you to complete these elements including supporting those with additional needs e.g. written portfolio can be sent in as audio or video records. If you would like to discuss this further do make contact with the lecturer at the school you wish to train at, to have your questions answered.
The Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) qualification is a complete training, which means you can go from novice to level 4 professional hypnotherapist in 10 months.
Each month you’ll learn a new aspect of how to be a hypnotherapist. In the time between modules we expect you to practice what you have learnt. At the beginning of the following module, you have time to ask questions and get feedback on your practical work. In this way you build up your skills and confidence at a pace to suit you.
Whilst some hypnotherapy courses are delivered over even just a weekend, or self-led learning online, you’ll find this doesn’t give you the depth of learning or experience needed to make a living as a professional hypnotherapist. Experience shows us that to be a confident, competent, effective and safe hypnotherapist takes more than just a weekend or a condensed week or two of training.
Our students often say it is the fastest 10 months of their lives and that the support of professional and practising hypnotherapists, together with so much practical experience, is what gave them the confidence to start their practices on graduation
Hypnotherapy courses vary greatly. Professional hypnotherapist training should teach you, to help, safely and effectively, with the issues and challenges you’ve learnt about. Your training should first and foremost be very practical, which is why on the CPHT Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma, you are expected to start seeing people from the beginning of your training.
However, to be truly effective, you’ll need your practical experience to be backed up by a thorough understanding of the model of hypnotherapy. You’ll need to be able to recognise and understand how to help with the common issues experienced by people seeking support from a hypnotherapist. And you’ll want to have the knowledge and understanding of how the brain, hypnosis and the psychotherapeutic element of your model of hypnotherapy works.
Not all hypnotherapy courses are set up like this, with many being taught very quickly with little or no practical work, sometimes online or even through self-directed distance learning. When you are just curious but don’t want to become an accredited professional hypnotherapist, this kind of training is a great way to enjoy learning about the theory of hypnosis.
If however, you want to become a professional hypnotherapist, you will need a broader understanding of both practical and theoretical knowledge, and the experience to back it up. This kind of training will give you the best grounding for your future career and is how the Hypnotherapy In Practice Diploma is designed.
There is no statutory regulation on hypnotherapy, counselling, or psychotherapy in the UK. However, just as with counselling and psychotherapy, you can be a hypnotherapist who adheres to strict codes of ethics through accredited training and professional associations. This gives our clients an assurance of the level of training and competence of the hypnotherapist and a redress system to access should something go wrong.
In order to be accredited this way, as a hypnotherapist, you’ll need to gain a certain level of education, training and experience. You’ll need to commit to a number of hours of professional supervision, training and adherence to a code of conduct.
Whilst there are many self-accrediting or unaccredited courses, the HPD is a nationally recognised award that is benchmarked against the Ofqual standards and accredited through the NCFE. This gives you the reassurance that you are training for a worthwhile qualification that is growing in acceptance, in recent years, with traditional medicine and health insurance companies.
If you want to become a hypnotherapist and have a career as a professional clinical hypnotherapist, you’ll want to do your research. There are a LOT of different training courses, offering many different types of hypnotherapy. You can learn over a single weekend or train for over a year. Courses are delivered online, distance or face to face learning. The choice can be overwhelming.
If you only want to learn a little bit about hypnosis, then a weekend course, even a taster day delivered online will be enough. However, would you really be happy offering hypnotherapy for anxiety, depression, weight management, OCD and many other clinical issues if you didn’t have in-depth learning and experience?
Clinical hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy, much like counselling, so to become a hypnotherapist you need thorough, evidence-based training that gives you a recognised qualification. Your training and qualification should be of a standard where you are eligible to join the respected hypnotherapy organisations and you can be insured for professional indemnity insurance.
You will want your training to give you enough practical experience so that you are competent, safe and confident enough to start practising as a professional hypnotherapist when you qualify. Your training should give you the basics of how to start and run a hypnotherapy practice as currently (2022) there are no employed positions as hypnotherapists.
If you want to become a hypnotherapist don’t just pick what looks quick, cheap and easy – pick what gives people the best and safest results and seems respected by the industry as a whole.
CPHT prides itself on the extensive post-graduate training options that we provide. These include:
- Continual professional development (CPD) courses of varying lengths. These are led by working therapists and experts in the field and provide further in-depth knowledge on topics such as fertility, working with children, bookkeeping, mindfulness, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder to name but a few. Courses are delivered via live video conferencing or face to face sessions.
- The Advanced Hypnotherapy Diploma (AHD). This qualification is provided only by the Clifton Practice and has been accredited by the NCFE as having measurable learning outcomes that have been benchmarked at Level 5 (using Ofqual’s Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) level descriptors). It is currently the highest Hypnotherapy qualification available in the UK.
- The Supervisor Diploma. This is also a level 5 diploma and trains experienced therapists to the level of being able to supervise others, helping them to grow as both therapists and business owners.
